Le Grand Cirque is a memoir in three parts recounting the author’s experience as a fighter pilot during the Second World War, from the beginning of the conflict to its end. After the war, Clostermann began a career as a writer by recounting this experience.
Nicknamed “France’s leading fighter ace,” he was made a Companion of the Liberation by de Gaulle. Published in 1948, Le Grand Cirque sold 3 million copies and was translated into more than 30 languages. It achieved worldwide success and was adapted several times into comic-strip and film versions. According to William Faulkner, “Le Grand Cirque is the best book to have come out of the war.”
