Published in 1922, La Vie en fleur is a kind of sequel to Le Petit Pierre and closes the long career of the writer, whose last book it is. In it, France returns, with a more searching analysis, to the formative years of young Pierre Nozière. A particularly perceptive remark about his relationship with his father — a legitimist and believer, uncertain what to make of secular Bonapartism — sums up the tone of this barely disguised autobiography: “His reticence on the subject prevented me from forming my own opinion by the usual method, which was to take the opposite view from his!”
