This is the second edition in this format, and the first published abroad: the Guilde du livre was the first French-language Swiss book-club publishing house, founded in 1936 by Albert Mermoud in Lausanne. Until 1978, the Guilde du livre published more than a thousand works across various series.
This was the first title issued that year, bringing the recent Goncourt-winning novel by Émile Ajar to a wider readership.
