Signed by André Breton and eleven other members of the Surrealist group, this tract reproduces the declaration read by Breton at the meeting at the Salle Wagram on 3 September 1936.
“As mere intellectuals, we declare that we hold the Moscow verdict and its execution to be abominable and inexpiable…”
Breton here takes up the defense of Leon Trotsky at a time when suspicion and mistrust of the USSR had spread through the Surrealist group. In contrast to the French communists, who presented the Moscow trials as legitimate acts of justice, Breton and the other members of the group argued that behind this appearance the Soviet regime was nothing more than a dictatorship, and that Stalin was “the principal enemy of the proletarian revolution.”
