The Voyage Out was Virginia Woolf’s first novel, published in England in 1915. It is translated here by Ludmila Savitzky, with a fine preface by Max-Pol Fouchet.
Written in 1912, it is a fierce social satire, described by the British writer E. M. Forster as follows: “a strange, tragic, inspired book, whose scene is a South America not found on any map and reached by a boat which would not float on any sea, an America whose spiritual boundaries touch Xanadu and Atlantis… it is a book in which the author has been afraid of nothing.” It was translated again in 1952 by Armel Guerne under the title Croisières, before being taken up more recently by Jacques Aubert for the Pléiade edition, under the title Traversée alone.
