In 1973, at the invitation of the painter’s widow, Jacqueline Picasso, André Malraux traveled to Mougins and then Vauvenargues to select paintings for a donation to the French State from the works assembled by Pablo Picasso. This journey through the painter’s studio, and also through the corridors of the newly founded Fondation Maeght, gave rise to the reflections recorded in La Tête d’obsidienne. The text was later partly incorporated into Le Miroir des limbes.
