Deliberately provocative in its title, La photographie n’est pas l’art (Photography Is Not Art) addresses the contemporary debate over photography’s artistic status only to overturn it. Rather than denying photography’s creative power, the book asserts Man Ray’s radically experimental conception of the medium.
Breton introduces the photographs with a short poetic text culminating in his celebrated proclamation: “But here is Man Ray. HERE IS THE MAN WITH THE MAGIC-LANTERN HEAD.”
