Georges Bernanos denounces the hypocrisy of a conservative bourgeoisie, the “bien-pensants,” whose spirit of moral complacency he would go on to condemn throughout his career. This was his first polemical essay, in which, drawing on the figure of Drumont, he mounts a fierce indictment of the excesses of his age: “J’ai juré de vous émouvoir – d’amitié ou de colère, qu’importe ? Je vous donne un livre vivant.”
A fine copy of distinguished editorial provenance: André Sabatier was, for more than thirty years, the literary director of Éditions Albin Michel.
