Suzanne Roger was the wife of the painter André Beaudin, a friend of Juan Gris, and this was her first — and only — appearance with Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. When Kahnweiler entrusted her with illustrating Max Jacob’s text, she was only twenty-four: “she had never illustrated a book and had little experience of engraving. She chose lithography, valuing its spontaneity of expression, and transposed the fantastical atmosphere of the poet’s text into her own poetic world” (Alexandre Illi & Eliott Cardet, DHK, éditeur, no. 22).

This was the fifth Max Jacob title published by Kahnweiler, after Saint Matorel (1911), Frère Matorel (1912), Le Siège de Jérusalem (1914) and Ne coupez pas mademoiselle (1921).
