Serialized in the NRF before its book publication by Gallimard in May 1933, La Condition humaine was inspired by the events in Shanghai in the spring of 1927, when Chiang Kai-shek crushed the Communist cells. More than a historical novel, it is a universal meditation on the human condition, on the greatness and fragility of men confronted with the upheavals of History.
The serial publication reflects the importance the Nouvelle Revue Française attached to Malraux, already established with Les Conquérants and La Voie royale: these advance excerpts helped prepare critical opinion and contributed to the book’s immediate success.
