Staged by Pierre Brasseur, with sets and costumes by Alexandre Trauner, Kean was first performed at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt on 16 November 1953, with Brasseur himself in the title role: a commission tailored by Sartre, who tightened the plot and sharpened its reflection on the genius of the actor, the truth of performance and its lies — a mirror held up to theater itself.
This “Kean-Sartre” went on to major revivals, notably the widely publicized 1987 production performed by Jean-Paul Belmondo and staged by Robert Hossein.
