This slim volume ranks among Cioran’s most important critical texts. The essay, later famous, first appeared here as an extensive preface to an anthology, before being reissued under the title Essai sur la pensée réactionnaire: à propos de Joseph de Maistre, published in 1977 by Fata Morgana, and subsequently collected in Exercices d’admiration. Cioran recognizes in Maistre not so much a master to follow as a first-rate mind, a stylist of fury and an implacable adversary of easy optimism and the religions of progress.

A fine copy despite a slightly yellowed spine. Publisher’s wraparound band preserved.
