In this exuberant novel, Jean d’Ormesson deploys his erudition and wit in tracing the mythical figure of the Wandering Jew. From the Vikings to Christopher Columbus, from Christ’s Passion to contemporary Venice, he takes a character condemned to eternal wandering — for refusing to give a glass of water to the tortured man on Golgotha — across the centuries: a philosophical tale in which the academician displays both humor and elegance.
Provenance: Suzanne Genevoix (1912–1997), who married Maurice Genevoix in 1943, preserved her husband’s extensive library, adding to it numerous volumes inscribed by his fellow members and friends at the Académie française, with whom she had forged many close ties.
