Secretary to André Gide and tenant of Jean-Paul Sartre, Gaston Criel also worked as assistant to Jean Cocteau during the filming of La Belle et la Bête. A poet and novelist, he was the author of Swing, a remarkable book devoted to his other passion, jazz. Georges Braque illustrated his collection Poèmes-Manifestes, providing a frontispiece for an edition printed in 50 copies. In 1938, Criel founded the circle “Pour la poésie” and published, that same year, his second collection of poetry, Gris, praised by Paul Éluard and Joë Bousquet.
A good copy.
