It was only after his return to France in the spring of 1951, following his amnesty, that Céline resumed work on the final versions of Féerie pour une autre fois, of which Normance forms the concluding volume. Four preparatory versions of the text are known, the earliest outline dating from late 1946, followed by successive drafts combining various fragments.

Publication reverted to Gallimard, after Gaston Gallimard had done everything in his power to win the writer back through the intermediary of Pierre Monnier. The contract between the two parties was signed on 18 July 1951 — only a fortnight after Céline’s return to France — under exceptional terms regarding royalties and advance payment.
