“Confident admiration” surely refers to the preparations for an election that, a few months later, would bring the two men closer together: on 24 January 1963, Jean Paulhan was elected to the Académie française, to the seat of Pierre Benoit. Among other academic works, Paulhan contributed the article “Jules Renard” to the publication Gloires de la France (Paris, Librairie académique Perrin, 1964), with a foreword by Genevoix, who had held the office of permanent secretary since 1958, a post he would occupy for fifteen years.
