Ex-libris pour sa soeur, Anne

The bookplate, designed and engraved by Sylvain Guillot — an engraver specializing in bookplates and heraldic tools, active between 1929 and 1945 — depicts a transatlantic arrival at Le Havre and Normandy. The ship’s sails are decorated with regional emblems and bear the name Anne Green.

Julien’s sister, she was born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1890, before the family emigrated to France, first to Le Havre and then to Paris, where her father became a representative of powerful cotton companies. It was there that her brother Julien was born in 1900.

After brilliant studies at the Lycée Molière, she worked in publishing and, after the war, published some fifteen novels. Close to her brother, she provided many of his translations and shared his life until her death on December 11, 1979. Green wrote of her in his famous Journal: “In the distance of a long absence, it seems to me that I see her better than in the days when we lived together. What I admire most in her is her faithfulness to the dreams of childhood.” Her most famous book remains Mes jours évanouis, a fictionalized account of these same childhood memories, published in 1951.
