This novel by a then almost unknown young writer impressed the jury with its freshness and refinement. Écrit sur de l’eau… tells the story of a Spanish painter’s love affairs, in a sensual, sunlit atmosphere with a distinctly Mediterranean charm.

The work reflects the turn-of-the-century taste for exoticism and luminous landscapes, close to Symbolist aesthetics, and helped broaden the scope of the Prix Goncourt, then still finding its place in the literary landscape. The novel was chosen with half the votes, against Jean Viollis, who also received five; the president, Léon Hennique, cast the deciding vote.

From the “Prix Goncourt” library of Gérard Pouguet, with bookplate.
