This novel by a then almost unknown young writer struck the jury with its freshness and refinement. Écrit sur de l’eau… tells the story of a Spanish painter’s love affairs, in a sensual, sunlit atmosphere touched with Mediterranean charm.

The book reflects the turn-of-the-century taste for exoticism and luminous landscapes, close to Symbolist aesthetics, and helped broaden the scope of the Prix Goncourt, which was still finding its place in the literary landscape.

Spine faded, otherwise a fine copy, very well bound.
