A magnificent letter in which Yourcenar thanks Max-Pol Fouchet for his words about Mémoires d'Hadrien, which he had greatly admired, while she was struggling to have Gallimard publish an essay devoted to Constantin Cavafy (or Kavafis), “one of the most famous poets of modern Greece; he is also one of the greatest, the most subtle in any case, perhaps the most original, yet the most steeped in the inexhaustible substance of the past.” Fouchet had sent Yourcenar his review of Mémoires d'Hadrien, intended for the journal Carrefour, entitled “Un Empereur se penche sur son passé,” published in the journal on January 9, 1952.
