Demain, il fera jour

Born in Tunis in 1934 to a Franco-Italian mother and a Polish father, Georges Wolinski came to France at the age of thirteen. In 1960 he joined the team of Hara-Kiri, led by Cavanna and Professor Choron, before going on to draw for Le Journal du Dimanche, Paris Match, and eventually Charlie Hebdo. Though he described himself first as a press cartoonist, he produced some 80 albums over his career.

Demain, il fera jour was published in response to the attacks of September 11, 2001: in this bittersweet album, Wolinski maps out a profoundly shaken new world order, surveying the couple, love, politics and social issues with wide-ranging success. Nine months later, in January 2005, Wolinski was awarded the Grand Prix at the 32nd Angoulême Festival, which he presided over the following year, in 2006, when a major exhibition of his work was held at the Centre national de la bande dessinée et de l’image.

Ten years later, on 7 January 2015, he was murdered by terrorists in the attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

A fine copy, presented to his longtime friend Régine Deforges. In 1984 she married the cartoonist Wiaz, who likewise contributed to Charlie Hebdo and Hara-Kiri. Along with Cabu and Siné, they took part in the television program Droit de réponse, hosted by Michel Polac on TF1 from 1981 to 1987. Wiaz illustrated the program’s debates live, using a graphics tablet. His drawing “Une maison de maçon, un pont de maçon, une télé de m…”, brandished on air by the host, led directly to the show’s cancellation on 19 September 1987. The episode’s subject was corruption in the construction industry, and it did not spare Francis Bouygues, TF1’s new owner.
