Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry is one of the leading figures of early twentieth-century Hungarian painting. Németh, a major historian of the Hungarian school, devotes this richly illustrated volume to him, describing a body of work now preserved for the most part at the Hungarian National Gallery.
In Hungary, only La Promesse de l’aube, Lady L. and La vie devant soi had been translated. Jean Seberg and Gary made at least one trip to Budapest, in 1966; Gary oversaw the Hungarian publication of Lady L., while Seberg appeared there in two films: La souris qui rugissait and À bout de souffle.
