The first album made up entirely of self-adhesive stickers was the one produced for the 1974 World Cup. Since then, each new edition has been eagerly awaited by millions of collectors, who swap their stickers at every tournament!

Also included is the very first album ever produced for a World Cup: Mexico 70, published by the English firm FKS (lacking 17 stickers). It appeared at the same time as the album issued by its competitor Panini, which was likewise Panini’s first “international” publication. The stickers in these two albums are not self-adhesive: they had to be affixed with a glue stick, attaching only the upper margin and leaving a short biographical text about the player visible beneath the photograph. The introduction of the fully self-adhesive sticker two years later changed everything: from the 1974 World Cup in Germany onward, the Modena firm became the sole manufacturer, launching a genuine industrial process in which stickers were sold in packets of five, shuffled by the Fifimatic, a large machine designed by the Panini brothers to randomize the contents of each pack.

Eight nations in all have won the competition since 1970; France claimed its first title on home soil in 1998, and a second in Moscow in 2018. Two finals were lost, in 2006 and 2022.
