One of 800 copies on vélin de Rives (no. 501).
Maurice Genevoix's copy, with bookplate.
First illustrated edition of Civilisation, published ten years after the original, in the series founded by Georges Crès.
Following a serious car accident in 1925, Crès had sold his shares in his publishing house to take over, in 1926, a smaller firm: Les Arts et le Livre, acquired from his brother-in-law Henri Jonquières. There he created several series, including this one. This printing, though modest, marks the entry of Civilisation into an illustrated library edition aimed at a wider readership. The presence of a copy in Maurice Genevoix’s library once again underscores his abiding interest in the war narratives published by his contemporaries.
A modest copy: foxing to the edges; trace of dampstaining to the final blank leaves and covers slightly warped.
From the library of Maurice Genevoix, “Aux Vernelles,” with bookplate.
