Charles de Gaulle
Secretary to Gaston Gallimard from 1923 to 1939, Robert Aron reached Algeria in 1940, where he joined the earliest administrative teams under General Giraud and then General de Gaulle. At the Liberation, he embarked on a body of work on contemporary French history that led him to publish numerous books, including a Histoire de Vichy in 1954.
Robert Aron was elected to the Académie française on 7 March 1974, the same day as Maurice Schumann, but sat alongside Maurice Genevoix and his fellow members for only a few months: he died suddenly on 19 April 1975, five days before his scheduled formal induction under the Coupole.
