A brief prose oratorio of classical restraint, this funeral chant sets down, in sober and solemn diction, the memory of the combatants of 1916, expressing a nation’s mourning rather than recounting its history. It stands among the earliest pages in which Henry de Montherlant established that blend of elevation, austerity and fraternity which would mark his writing throughout the 1920s.

A good copy with an interesting provenance, linking two men who would later sit together under the dome of the Académie française and maintain a lasting relationship.
