This poem was composed for René Char’s companion at the time, Maryse Lafont. Char sent it to her in a letter in the autumn of 1955, then promptly gave it to his friend Pierre-André Benoît for a new miniature edition, whose deluxe issue he had illustrated with an engraving by Jean Hugo.
Accompanied by two autograph letters signed by Rose Adler to René Char, in which she acknowledges receipt of the same volume, “ce ravissant poème,” on 16 October, along with another letter, dated 12 October 1955, which is “qu’un signe d’amitié à vous et au petit faune [Maryse Lafont]…”.
