Published in several volumes beginning in 1994, this work is a major first-hand account of General de Gaulle as statesman, but also as a man in his private life. A Gaullist deputy at the age of thirty-three and holder of several major ministerial posts, Alain Peyrefitte was General de Gaulle’s confidant and spokesman for four years, holding hundreds of one-on-one conversations with him between 1959 and 1969.
This copy is inscribed to Suzanne Genevoix, the second wife of Maurice Genevoix, whom she had married in 1943. After the death of the Permanent Secretary of the Académie française in 1980, she continued to fight for the recognition of his work, from the wartime pages of Ceux de 14 to his naturalist and committed writings on the defense of nature. She pursued this task — together with her daughter Sylvie — until her death in 2012, at the age of 101.
