Published late in his life, Ce que je crois is both a spiritual testament and an exercise in synthesis: Senghor sets out the foundations of his humanist thought, at the crossroads of his roots in the Christian faith and the Greco-Latin heritage. He returns in particular to his vision of cultural métissage, his fidelity to Catholicism and his admiration for Teilhard de Chardin, an advocate of a civilization of the universal — one of the “rendez-vous du donner et du recevoir.”
Copy inscribed to Maurice Druon, barely three days after the book’s publication. Senghor had entered the Académie française while Druon was serving as its Secrétaire perpétuel.
