This is a jubilant tribute paid by Henry Miller to Blaise Cendrars, “the man I have esteemed most” — the first to salute Tropique du Cancer, in January 1935, in the review Orbes, only months after their first meeting in 1934 at a Montmartre wine merchant’s. As early as 1950, Miller had announced to his friend his intention of publishing such a homage: “I let myself go into a rhapsody or unrestrained praise of you and your work.” When Cendrars received the book, he expressed his emotion, adding: “What delights me is finding myself with you under the same cover, as if we were playing a good joke on our friends.”
