A contemporary rewriting of Perrault’s tale, Barbe bleue is a closed-door drama set in a Parisian mansion, in which Saturnine Puissant, a young Belgian teaching at the École du Louvre, becomes the flatmate of Don Elemirio Nibal y Milcar, a Spanish grandee as refined as he is unsettling. There is one rule: never enter the “dark room,” a forbidden chamber where the portraits of the eight previous tenants are displayed.
