Au rendez-vous allemand
The edition includes three previously unpublished pieces inspired by the Spanish Civil War.
Signed presentation inscription: “à André Frénaud qui contredit par des mots délivrés les plus ordinaires tyrannies, son vieil ami, Paul Éluard.”
André Frénaud kept, laid into the copy, an invitation addressed to him in December 1943 for the exhibition devoted to Oscar Dominguez held at Louis Carré’s gallery.
Paul Éluard wrote the catalogue preface for the Dominguez exhibition, of whom he said that he “opens new windows onto Surrealism.” Held from 1 to 14 December 1943, it was the painter’s first exhibition in Paris; Éluard bought one of the paintings on display, La couturière. He used it in 1948 to illustrate Voir, a publication printed in Geneva conceived shortly after Nusch’s death, in her memory and in tribute to their friends. The poem devoted to Dominguez was printed facing his friend’s canvas; Dominguez would be expelled from the Surrealist movement in 1945 for supporting Paul Éluard’s political stance. He was likewise excluded from the Surrealist exhibition presented by Breton on his return from the United States in 1947. In protest, Paul Éluard immediately gave Dominguez the opportunity to produce the first illustrated edition of Poésie et vérité 1942 (see no. 67), published in November 1947.
No copy was sent to André Breton.
