Poet, critic and essayist, Gaston Puel became close after the war to Joë Bousquet, Tristan Tzara, Hans Bellmer and, above all, René Char, alongside whom he walked for many years among the artists they both admired. In 1971 he directed a seminar on Char at the University of Maryland (USA). He had earlier founded his own printing workshop in 1961, publishing exquisite artist’s books, the most important with Miró and Arp. It was with Arp that Puel published his collection of poems, Ce chant entre deux astres, in Lyon in 1959, with two illustrations by Arp. Six years later, Arp illustrated this book, devoted to him by Puel, with four original linocuts.
