First printing of the 100 black-and-white photographs by Fred Stein, with an introduction by Jan-Albert Goris.

Born in Dresden, Fred Stein fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and settled in Paris, where he began his career as a photographer. Forced into exile again in 1941, he moved to New York, where he photographed the streets and inhabitants of the city, continuing a body of work begun in Paris in the 1930s. 5th Avenue is his first photographic book, devoted to the famous New York avenue, offering a journey through one hundred images from Washington Square to Harlem. Stein focuses on the everyday life of the blocks that make up the avenue — its passersby, shopkeepers, children and residents — in a photographic walk that provides a vivid portrait of postwar New York.

Small restoration to the lower margin of the dust jacket.
