« 3 chambres à Manhattan » [Three Beds in Manhattan]
[Paris, 1960].
Gouache and graphite on 1 f. canson (280 x 185 mm), studio stamp on back.
Original artwork for a proposed dust-jacket design for Georges Simenon’s Trois chambres à Manhattan.
First published in 1946, Trois chambres à Manhattan (Three Bedrooms in Manhattan) was the first of Simenon’s “non-Maigret” novels issued by the Presses de la Cité and the first novel he wrote during his years in North America.
From 1957 to 1962, Jean Jacquelin designed the covers for 27 Simenon titles published by the Presses de la Cité. This striking nocturnal Manhattan composition was created for the 1960 reissue but ultimately rejected in favor of a different design.
Accompanied by the 1961 edition in its published Jacquelin dust jacket, allowing the unrealized original artwork to be compared with the final design.
From Jean Jacquelin’s personal archives, with the estate stamp.
