Né le 26 février 1956, Michel Houellebecq publie en 1994 son premier roman chez Maurice Nadeau — après un essai sur Lovecraft et deux recueils de poèmes où se lit déjà, en un seul alexandrin, toute la couleur de l'œuvre à venir : « Mon père était un con solitaire et barbare. » Extension du domaine de la lutte, Les Particules élémentaires, Soumission : chaque livre a suscité scandale ou polémique, parfois les deux à la fois, comme lors de la sortie de Soumission le 7 janvier 2015. Couronné par le prix Goncourt en 2010 pour La Carte et le Territoire, où il se met en scène jusqu'à son propre assassinat, il reste l'écrivain français contemporain le plus traduit et le plus discuté — diagnostiqueur implacable d'une civilisation qu'il décrit, sans haine apparente, comme engagée dans un pourrissement méthodique et volontaire.
