
John-Antoine Nau

Né à San Francisco le 19 novembre 1860 sous le nom d'Eugène-Léon-Édouard-Joseph Torquet, John-Antoine Nau était un parfait inconnu du milieu littéraire parisien lorsque Félix Fénéon, depuis La Revue blanche, fit circuler son manuscrit parmi les membres du jury Goncourt — quelques nouvelles et une plaquette de vers à compte d'auteur constituaient alors l'essentiel de son bagage. Force ennemie l'emporta par six voix contre quatre le 21 décembre 1903, faisant de lui le tout premier lauréat du prix, et un lauréat singulier : Nau résidait à Saint-Tropez ce jour-là, et c'est son frère qui reçut le prix en son nom. Paradoxe supplémentaire : malgré toutes les démarches entreprises, cet Américain d'origine n'obtint jamais la nationalité française, faisant du premier prix Goncourt une récompense décernée, de fait, à un écrivain étranger. Il mourut le 17 mars 1918 à Tréboul, dans le Finistère.
