André Malraux’s last text, this study of literature since the nineteenth century nonetheless departs from conventional literary history: personal positions and interpretations abound throughout, leading to a reflection on audiovisual media and its profound impact on our relationship with the world.

Already ill, Malraux completed this text before sending Sophie de Vilmorin, his last companion, to deliver the manuscript to Gallimard. This was in late October; a month later, on 23 November 1976, he died, three months before publication.

Fine condition, uncut.
