One of Anouilh’s “pièces secrètes,” Le Scénario is set in August 1939 in an inn in the forest of Fontainebleau, where two filmmakers — played by Jean Barney and Daniel Gélin — improvise a film while Hitler rants on the radio. Anouilh constructs a fierce mise en abîme of spectacle and manipulation, in which the two characters believe they are directing the action, while in truth “the only scenario ready to be shot is the war.”
This is one of the earliest plays to feature Sabine Azéma, who made her film debut the same year.
