Faulkner’s first work translated into French, this novel earned him his reputation as a dark and scandalous author. As Malraux wrote in his celebrated preface, Sanctuary is “the intrusion of Greek tragedy into the detective novel,” in which the author set out, by his own admission, to invent “the most horrifying story imaginable.” Set in a climate of violence, tension and perversion, this key novel is without doubt Faulkner’s darkest tale.
A fine copy, despite some foxing and a small loss at the foot of the spine.
