Winner of the 1969 Prix Goncourt, on the third ballot, ahead of Robert Sabatier’s Les Allumettes suédoises (two votes) and Patrick Modiano’s La Ronde de nuit (one vote). The novel was adapted for the screen by director Pierre Granier-Deferre under the title La Race des seigneurs.
