Henri Fauconnier (1879–1973), who spent many years in Malaysia as a rubber planter, drew on this firsthand experience for a novel that captures the fascination and complexity of colonial life, far removed from conventional exotic clichés.
This Prix Goncourt also marked an important milestone for the Stock publishing house: although Stock had already been associated with the prize in 1906 with Dingley, l’illustre écrivain by the Tharaud brothers — then published under the Pelletan imprint but distributed by Stock — Malaisie was the first major Goncourt triumph published openly and exclusively under the Stock imprint.
