L’Église is the only stage play written and published by Céline. It was composed as early as 1926, with a protagonist named Doctor Bardamu, and already contains every theme that would later define Voyage. It is from L’Église that Sartre borrowed Yudenzsweck’s famous remark about Bardamu, “He is a fellow of no collective importance, he is merely an individual,” which he placed at the head of Nausea.
