Paul Léautaud adopted the pseudonym Maurice Boissard in 1907 to sign his celebrated theatrical chronicles in the Mercure de France. The mask was fairly transparent, but it allowed him to practice, with particular freedom, an art of personal — often ferocious — judgment that would make him one of the most singular figures in French literary and theatrical criticism of the early twentieth century.

Madame Cantili belongs fully to this world. The text had first appeared in January 1921 in the Gazette d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, then its “Portrait de Madame Cantili” was reprinted in Les Nouvelles littéraires in March 1924, before this first publication in book form in 1925.
