Published late in Robert Sabatier’s career as a novelist, Le Cygne noir occupies a singular place in his body of work. Beneath the guise of a coming-of-age novel, the book in fact unfolds a quest for origins, a recurring motif in Sabatier’s work: his father, a First World War combatant, and his mother, who kept a small grocery shop, both disappeared while he was still very young.
Literary director at Éditions Albin Michel for seven years, until his election to the Académie Goncourt in 1971, Sabatier remains best known for Les Allumettes suédoises, published in 1969.
A fine copy.
