Before championing Lamarckian theories and calls for “social progress,” Jules Sageret — novelist, essayist and popularizer of science — here examines the influence of conflict on the moral and technical evolution of humanity. He would develop this subject further two years later in Philosophie de la guerre et de la paix, a work crowned by the Académie française.
This essay does not appear in Jean Norton Cru’s Témoins, no doubt because of its purely speculative and theoretical nature: Sageret reports nothing of front-line experience, but instead seeks to lay the groundwork for a philosophical reflection on war.
