La Boue
The author's copy, with autograph corrections.
It bears at the front the manuscript ownership inscription: “Maurice Genevoix, 1921 (écrit 1919-1920).”
This fourth of Genevoix’s war narratives covers the period from November 4, 1914 to January 10, 1915. The first of the five narratives to be written after the war, La Boue shows a more deliberate, less immediate composition than the earlier titles, with more constructed writing and covering a longer period of time. The text is dedicated to his father.
In addition to about a hundred corrections, most of them typographical, this copy includes the addition or correction of certain names that came back to him as he reread the text, pencil in hand.
A precious copy, bound in half blue morocco with corners, as were many of the copies — often on fine papers — kept in his library.
From the library of Maurice Genevoix, at “Les Vernelles,” with bookplate.
