Following the publication of Moulin premier and Char’s gradual departure from pure Surrealist poetry, his work turned toward the anxiety provoked by the rise of Nazism, a shift marked by the two collections that followed: Placard pour un chemin des écoliers (1937) and Dehors la nuit est gouvernée (1938). Both works are reissued together here, again by Guy Lévis-Mano, with a new preface.
