Henri Pourrat’s first novel, Le Mauvais Garçon is set in Auvergne on the eve of the First World War, centered on the young Bernard and the mystery surrounding his father’s death. Thwarted love, family secrets and male violence unfold against a natural landscape that is already far more than mere setting.
Begun before the war, then abandoned and resumed afterwards, the novel appeared while Pourrat had already been working for several years on his great cycle Gaspard des montagnes.
