One of three texts written during the First World War, while Rolland was living in Switzerland, where he was at the time war was declared. This “story of a free conscience” is a meditative novel, the account of a man struggling with himself, to which Zweig devoted a long study in his Romain Rolland: a “struggle to conquer his personal freedom” and to courageously denounce the tragedy of war, becoming “one against all” and a “martyr to truth.”
Spine slightly faded.
